Hello! in this post I want to share a tips on how to paint accurately from life. From real objects/model. Using measurement techniques and ya! intuition of course.
Painting directly from life is really good for making your intuition sharp as a painter. It’s okay to paint from photos, but you also need to paint directly from life if you want your skills get better. I have already proven this myself.
Here, I use a live object for example. An Arabian teapot with a red satin background. I use oil paint and use 30 x 40 cm panel board as my media.
Actually this technique is also very helpful in painting portraits from photos, if you are a portrait artist.
Insert objects/models into your canvas
Regardless of the size of the canvas you are using. To place the object design on your canvas, start by making a scale. In this example, an Arabian gold teapot that I use as a live object. (This teapot is not made with real gold)
Start sketching and start to determine the position and size and width of the object. See the height and space of the main object from the edge of the canvas.
Use your brush and close one of your eyes to measure each angle that correlates with the vertical/horizontal position.
Always keep on focus when you doing the sketch of the shape and the forms of the object.
On under painting process, I usually sketch using burnt umber color that diluted with turpentine or mineral spirits. If you like using pencils or charcoal to sketch, that’s good too! it’s just about habits.
Okay, see the example below
Always check your sketch by squinting and measuring using your brush or pencil until you feel your sketch is correct and accurate.
My tips: Make sure to keep your back and neck straight during sketching and painting process. It will help you to see the law of perspective better. It also good for your spine.
When you finish sketching, take a break about fifteen minutes and let the turpentine dry and not too smell.
Put the first oil color layer
Regardless of what painting style you want to achieve. The point is, when you succeed in sketching accurately. In the coloring section, you can do whatever you want by following the basic sketch.
I always believe what intuition saw at the beginning of the sketch. And then next do some improvisation when working with colors by always checking using measuring technique and squinting eyes. Squint squint and squint again …
And the result …
The photo above is still wet, so to see a better picture of this painting you can check here.
That’s how to paint accurately from life by using measuring techniques with brushes.
Which will be very useful if combined with intuition to accurately paint from live models/objects directly from life or from photographs.
Till next blog about painting tips, happy painting! 🙂
