As a tribute to The Maestro. I made a portrait of Mr. Affandi. He is one of the most famous Indonesian Painters and also one of the most influence for the next generation of Indonesian painter. Including my self.
When I was a kid and every time I draw people I always said his name something like “Hey you will become a painter like Affandi” etc. So he already influences me since I was a kid and before I know the western Painter like Rembrandt, John Singer Sargent, etc.
Who’s Affandi
He was an Indonesian artist. Born in Cirebon, West Java. Mr. Affandi Begin his painting career as naturalist then change to Impressionist and In 1950 He changes his painting style to Expressionism.
His style in Expressionism is similar to Vincent Van Gogh’s style. The different and what unique of Affandi painting style is, he painted by directly squeezing the paint out of its tube.
He came across this technique is by accident, when he intended to draw a line one day. As he lost his patience when he was looking for a missing pencil, then he applied the paint directly from its tube.
And the resulting effect, as he found out, was that the painted object appeared more alive. His invention in painting became his signature and irreplaceable artist.
So, who knows if in the future I may also change my painting style into pure Expressionism like him.
Anyway, in this portrait of Mr. Affandi. I mix some of the different painting styles on it. From realism, Naturalism, impressionism and a little touch of Expressionism.
And this is it! I can’t paint like him, no-one can’t. But this is the best I can to paint his portrait in his personas regardless of his artistic style.
