Hello! in this post I want to share a short tips how to paint accurately from life using measurement techniques and your intuition.
Painting from life is really good to make your intuition sharp as a painter. It’s okay to paint from photo, but you also need to paint from life if you want your skill get better. It works for me.
Here, I use a still life model for an examples, an Arabian teapot with red satin background. I use oil color and use 30 x 40 cm panel board as my media.
Actually this technique not only help to paint accurately from life but also create for painting any object or for paint a portrait from photograph if you are a portrait artist.
Okey, lets get start it!
Put object/model to your canvas design
To put the design on your canvas, start by scaling the model regardless what size your canvas that you use. In this example a gold Arabian teapot I use as a model/object. (The teapot wasn’t made by real gold)
Use your brush and squint your eye to measure every angle and it correlation with the vertical/horizontal position that shaped the form of the model, and stay focus on that while you doing sketch.
I usually sketch using burnt umber oil color diluted with turps or mineral spirits. If you like to to use pencil or charcoal to sketch, thats fine too! it just about habit.
See the example below
Always check your sketch by squint your eye and measuring using your brush until you feel your sketch is right.
My tips: Make sure to keep your back and your neck straight while painting/sketching, it will help you to see the better perspective law.
When you done sketching, take a break about fifteen minutes to let the odorless dry.
Start adding first paint layer /dead color
Regardless what the painting style you like to achieve. The point is, when you successfully sketch the model. In paint section you can do whatever you want by following the sketch root.
I always trust what my intuition see at the beginning of the sketch and do some improvisation while working with the color by checking again using eye squint and measurement.
Squint, squint and squinting again.
And the result is …
The photo of finished painting is still wet , so in the next post I will upload the better picture of this painting.
That’s a short tip’s about how useful measurement technique combined with intuition to paint accurately from life model/object.
Not promise guys, but I will try to share another painting tips again next time
And till next blog, happy painting 🙂
